But a lot of what goes on, I think, that takes us and our teams to our potential is our capacity to motivate the players that are in our environment. And it just gave me a completely different perspective, because my perspective is everyone on my roster, not the one individual thats hurting my roster. Anson: And this will crack you up. Now, does this mean in loving them, you dont set standards for them? And even in their review of where they stand in self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability, with basically 2 exceptionswell, actually, with just 1 exceptionevery one of their grades is their own, so when they average it out they are doing their own evaluation. Coach Dorrance: Well, I think what youre trying to do within the context of what youre talking about in the work world, but this applies in our stuff incredibly. And Ive learned that youre not going to change everyone. Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. Theres a call right now towards authoritarianism. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. So if you want to develop elite athletes, you dont develop them in a recreational environment. Yes. Some want to be exempt. Part of that is hiring more coaches to do that. So what youve got to do is youve got to set them free. And she runs a character lab. So tell us, how do you convince some woman to transfer or to quit the team? Maybe you can let us in on the secret. He says, you know, when you do fire someone, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. We had no idea if this was the best stuff. And basically you have a strong man running everything. They leave the room and they get together as a cabal and they say, oh my gosh, this crazy Russian doesnt know what hes doing. And one of the things that really interested me the most about you, Anson, after reading about you and talking to Lindsay Henson here at Eagle Hill, and one of the phrases that she associates most with you and the team culture, was refuse to lose. Lindsay said refuse to lose really stays with her today, and not just as a memory, but really and truly as her mindset and how she shows up in all aspects of her life. And she said, Anson, this is the most extraordinary man Ive ever met in my life. Right now were in the heart of the womens World Cup, and this inspired me to learn from elite athletes and coaches to unpack their tips and tricks for building winning cultures. And usually it blames someone else. And weve made all kinds of mistakes on this because originally we would actually share where they ranked among the 30 players in character, and that, you know, I didnt think ended up being very positive.
